Balai Pustaka was established with the name Commissie voor de Volkslectuur (Dutch: "Commission for Reading People") by the Dutch government on 14 September 1908 Commissie voor de Volkslectuur later changed to "Hall Poestaka" on September 22, 1917 Balai Pustaka published approximately 350 titles per year which include dictionaries, reference books, skills, literary, social, political, religious, economic, and counseling
